Place Items on Pallets 

Even though self-storage units offer adequate protection, you still sometimes have to worry about precipitation and potential liquids damaging your items. That's why it's a good idea to put your items on pallet racks inside the storage unit.

The pallets keep your prized possessions or furniture off the ground, for maximum protection. Placing items on pallets also helps promote air flow. This essentially prevents humidity from building up and causing damage to sensitive items, such as electronics and paper documents. Just make sure the pallet is strong enough to support what's going on top. 

Label Boxes Appropriately

It's fairly common for people to get in a hurry and not label their boxes after placing them inside the unit. Then, when they need to find something, they have to spend hours searching. You can avoid this fate simply by labeling every box that goes inside.

It's a good idea to label your boxes based on categories. So if you're searching for kitchen appliances or bathroom supplies, you'll know exactly which box to look in. Also think about creating a graphic chart where each labeled box is. Then, you'll know exactly where to go once the storage unit is opened. 

Choose the Right Lock

The only way to make absolutely sure your items are secure once moved inside the storage unit is to choose an appropriate lock. Not all locks are created equal. Ideally, you want to choose a lock that's made from durable materials. A stainless steel padlock, for example, will not be easy to tamper with or break. 

The lock also needs to be suitable to extreme weather elements, such as snow and rain. This way, it will not rust over time or get structurally compromised. Finally, it's important to choose a reputable lock brand. Choose a brand that's backed by positive reviews, so you can have a peace of mind when away from your unit. 

Heated self-storage units are great resources you can use when you need extra room for possessions. As long as you use these units appropriately and make the right preparations, your unit will work out long-term.
