4 Tips For Moving And Storing Mattresses

Posted on: 8 September 2017

From packing and hauling to finding a new residence, the stressful nature of moving is easy to see. Fortunately, proper planning and the help of professionals will ensure your move is not only less stressful, but also more efficient. Of course, preparing certain items for your move is necessary to keep them safe. While 40.7 percent of buyers will pay $500 or less for a queen-size mattress, proper protection will prevent you from having to spend money on a new mattress. Before moving day, use these tips to prepare your mattress for transport and storage.

Clean

Your mattress is used a great deal over time. Dirt, dust, dead skin, and other allergens will build up on and inside your mattress even with periodic maintenance. To ensure you do not bring these allergens into your new home, clean the mattress thoroughly before moving.

Remove sheets, blankets, comforters, pillows, and bed skirt from your mattress and box spring. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda across the top of both the mattress and box spring. Allow the baking soda to sit for a few hours. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer, so using it on your bedding will help absorb any odors that may be lingering.

After a few hours, use a handheld attachment to vacuum your mattress and box spring. This will remove the baking soda and any dirt, dust, hair, and debris.

Cover

After your mattress and box spring have been cleaned and deodorized, you should cover each piece. Ask your movers if they offer specialized mattress boxes or bags that will effectively cover and protect your mattress and box spring.

If you are unable to find these specialty items, consider painter's plastic. Visit your local hardware or home improvement store and purchase a large package of painter's plastic. Use the plastic to cover the mattress, wrapping it in layers. Secure the plastic in place using painter's tape. Use the plastic to wrap the box spring, as well.

Transport

Once your mattress and box spring have been covered, you can transport them to your new home or storage facility. These important pieces of bedding may not look heavy, but their larger size and bulky weight will be difficult to move.

To avoid back injuries, make sure to support your lower back by wearing a back brace. It is also wise to have another person lifting and carrying to your new destination. Make sure pathways are clean so you do not have to worry about tripping over boxes, pets, or children.

When lifting, use your abdominal muscles and legs instead of your shoulders and back. This will reduce the risk of back and neck strain, which can affect your ability to continue moving.

Place the mattress and box spring inside the moving truck in a way that will cushion other furniture pieces. Be sure to secure the pieces in place by tying them down to the bed of the truck. Your wrapped mattress will serve as an extra layer of protection, reducing the risk of damage to wood and upholstered furniture.

Store

In some instances, you may need to store your mattress, box spring, and other belongings. Whether placing your belongings in short or long term storage, make sure to utilize a climate-controlled unit.

Excessively high or low temperatures can damage your mattress and box spring, adding moisture that can lead to mold and warping the wood of your box spring. Climate-controlled units allow you to store your items in proper temperatures and healthy humidity levels of around 55 percent.

Moving your mattress does not have to be a complicated process. With these simple tips, you can move and store your mattress and box spring in a safe and efficient manner.
